As Land O' Lakes residents reflect on those who served and those who continue to serve, here is a look at the origin of the day designated in their honor.

Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. What's open and what's closed on Veterans Day 2012.
Veterans Day is just around the corner and that means Land O’ Lakes residents should be prepared for a number of closings around town and throughout Pasco County. While the holiday falls on Sunday, Nov. 11, it’s officially observed on Monday, Nov. 12. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, which means mail service won’t run and most government offices will be closed. Here’s a rundown of what's open and what's closed on Veterans Day in Pasco County: Schools The Pasco County school district does not observe Veterans Day. As people across America recognize men and women who have served in the armed forces, Land O' Lakes students will have to hit the books. All Pasco County Public Schools are open Monday, Nov. 12, according to the district's calendar. Most county government offices, however, are closed in observance of the holiday. While students in Pasco don't get the day off, most schools do have some observance of the holiday on their calendars. And for those who are just tired of hitting the books, there's a break on the horizon. Pasco schools close Nov. 19-23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
