Wesley Chapel Student Gets Lesson in Democracy at Romney Rally

An admitted political junkie, 14-year-old Sergio Calderon came to Wednesday's Romney rally with his stepfather, Steve Dale.

Wesley Chapel High School student Sergio Calderon may be a bit more appreciative of America's freedoms than the usual 14-year-old. That's because he's only been an American citizen for two years. He and his mother immigrated from Peru. And, although he didn't have to take the citizenship test to become a citizen due to his age, he quizzed his mother before she took her test. That process sparked an interest in the political process, said Calderon's stepfather, Steve Dale, of Wesley Chapel. "He went through the entire citizenship process with his mother so they could become legal citizens," said Dale. "That's where he learned a lot about our government." To encourage his stepson's interest, Dale decided to take Calderon to a political rally…

Details Emerge in Wesley Chapel Acid Bomb Case

The acid used was a common household cleaner.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has released more information about an early morning fire on the Wesley Chapel High School campus that led to a brief lockdown at the school. According to an arrest affidavit, the incident took place around 7:30 this morning on the north side of the school’s gym. A 15-year-old 10th-grader is said to have created an “acid bomb” and tossed it into a trash can where it started a small fire. The acid used in the bomb was Works toilet bowl cleaner. The bomb itself is known as a “Works Bomb,” the affidavit said. The teen, who was subsequently arrested, was seen by a witness who said he watched the boy place tinfoil in the bottle, shake it and throw it into the can. “When the device exploded, it created a loud …

Arrest Made in Wesley Chapel High Acid Bomb Case

Pasco County deputies have taken a 10th-grader into custody.

A 15-year-old boy has been accused of starting a fire at Wesley Chapel High this morning that resulted in the school being placed on modified lockdown. According to a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office media release, the school’s resource deputy arrested the teen for making and discharging a destructive device, which is a felony. The teen was also charged with disruption of a school function. The teen is said to have set off a chemical reaction in a plastic bottle, which was then thrown into a trash can. This started a fire that caught the attention of a school staff member. The school was subsequently placed on lockdown until emergency officials could deem the campus safe. There were no injuries reported, but a staff member may have been …

Lockdown Lifted at Wesley Chapel High School

A “homemade chemical device” was used to start a fire in an outdoor trash can, officials say.

After an early morning scare, classes have resumed as normal at Wesley Chapel High School. According to Pasco School District spokeswoman Summer Romagnoli, the school was on a modified lockdown this morning, Feb. 21, after a staff member noticed smoke billowing out of an outdoor trash can. “As a proactive measure, she immediately placed the school in a modified lockdown and contacted safety officials,” Romagnoli wrote in an email. “Law enforcement has determined that the disruption was caused by a homemade chemical device. They removed the device, checked the entire campus and deemed it safe to resume normal operations.” No one was injured as a result of the fire, Romagnoli said. “We will continue to work with law enforcement as they …
