Southbound I-75 Entrance Ramp Closing at State Road 56

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced the ramp will be closed Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Land O’ Lakes residents who need to head south on Interstate 75 might want to avoid the State Road 56 entrance ramp. The Florida Department of transportation has announced the ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 until 5 p.m. April 3. It’s also possible the ramp will be closed again Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The State Road 54 entrance ramp will remain open. Drivers can also get on the interstate southbound at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

Man Dies in I-75 Crash

Christian Nicholas Reimer was headed north on Interstate 75 in Pasco County when his car left the roadway, crashed into a tree and overturned, authorities said.

A 21-year-old Largo man was killed when his car hit a tree and overturned on the side of a Pasco County roadway early Thursday morning, authorities said. Christian Nicholas Reimer was headed north on Interstate 75, just south of State Road 52, at about 12:50 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Reimer's Pontiac Grand Am traveled into the center grass lane "for unknown reasons," investigators said, at which point he over-corrected to the right. His car traveled back across the northbound lanes and onto the outside grass shoulder, where it crashed into a tree and overturned. Reimer suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, the highway patrol reports. The incident remains under investigation.

I-75 Construction Shouldn’t Cause Holiday Delays

The Florida Department of Transportation is limiting work during peak holiday travel time.

As work on the $95 million, 11.4-mile Interstate 75 widening project continues, motorists from the Land O’ Lakes area don’t need to worry about construction delaying holiday travel too much, say officials at the Florida Department of Transportation. “There should be little difference than before construction over the holidays,” wrote John McShaffrey, department spokesman, in an email. “Some temporary barrier walls will be in place (which tends to slow down some drivers) to protect workers and drivers in construction areas.” The widening project includes the stretch of I-75 from Fowler Avenue in Temple Terrace to State Road 56 in Pasco County. The interstate will be widened from four to six/eight lanes throughout that stretch. The project …

State Road 56 Exits Set to Change Tuesday

The interstate exit ramps are located about 2 miles sooner than the old ones.

Getting off the interstate and onto State Road 56 is about to get tricky for motorists who are used to the old traffic pattern. The Florida Department of Transportation intends to open the new northbound exit ramps for both Interstate 275 and Interstate 75 on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The new ramps are located about two miles further southbound than drivers coming home to Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel are accustomed to, said John McShaffrey, spokesman for FDOT. “Pay extra attention,” McShaffrey warned motorists, adding that those who do miss the exits will have to go up to State Road 54. The new exit ramps are part of a $31.4 million project to rework the I-275/I-75 interchange with State Road 56. Work began in October 2009 and will continue for…

Smoke May Hinder The Ride Home On I-75

The remains of an early afternoon fire could cause visibility issues near State Road 52.

Pasco County Fire Rescue is warning motorists that there is a “high probability” of smoke in the State Road 52 area of Interstate 75. The smoke is a result of an early afternoon controlled burn in the Darby area of Pasco County that “escalated quickly out of the property owner’s ability to control,” agency officials wrote in a media release. Fire rescue responded with six brush trucks, six fire engines, two volunteer fire engines and three tankers to get the 125-acre blaze under control. The fire was reported around 12:50 p.m. and was about 90 percent contained by 2:29. The state Division of Forestry began a back burn at 2:49 p.m. to avoid further escalation, the report said. The fire did spread into a bog area, which is why there is a …

What's Up With That? The I-75 Rest Area

Have a burning question related to the Land O' Lakes area? This is the place to ask.

Welcome to our new feature on Land O' Lakes Patch: "What's Up With That?" We'll use this spot each Tuesday to attempt to answer a question that's on readers' minds. You ask it and we'll do our best to get the answers. To kick off this brand new feature, we'll answer a question that we at Land O' Lakes Patch have been wondering: Just when will the rest area before the Land O' Lakes exit on Interstate 75 be finished? According to the Florida Department of Transportation's website, this project won't reach completion until next spring. The rest area near the State Road 56 exit has been under construction since the summer of 2010. Work is visibly progressing, but it's going to be some time before motorists can use the facilities.
