Fred Bischoff lived at Lake Como Family Nudist Resort but dreamed of a creating a place of his own. He wanted a place that would allow the members to have clothing-optional choices. Bischoff was a minister, a stockbroker and a Realtor. His dream became a purchase on April 11, 1980. A grand opening ceremony for Paradise Lakes was held on Aug. 16, 1980, featuring a water ski show, naked sky divers and an open bar. The original 42 acres grew to 72 acres and included a beach, a y-shaped pool, a whirlpool, 3 tennis courts and a 4,000 square foot clubhouse. The community's one bedroom, one bath units sold for $24,000 each at the time. During this time, Bischoff became the president of his daughter's PTA and his wife served as PTA president …

There’s a first time for everything. And recently, Land O’ Lakes hosted the first-ever national championship of nude running. The Sept. 30 Bare Dare 5K at Caliente drew runners from 12 states to compete for the title of national nude running champ, a designation that didn’t exist before this year. Whit Lasseter of South Tampa won the past two Bare Dare races, and was hoping to clinch the national title this year, but she was edged out by Jessica Sebor of St. Petersburg. Sebor, the editor of Woman's Running Magazine, clinched the top spot with a time of 19:42. It was Sebor’s first nude 5K— and the first time she ever ran naked, she said. "I'm so excited. Whit Lasseter hopes to win her third Bare Dare 5K on Sept. 30, this time for the title of national champion.
The question nude running champ Whit Lasseter is asked most often: Does it hurt? The answer, she said, is no. Lasseter took up running about 4 years ago. She has won Caliente's Bare Dare 5K for the past two years. On Sept. 30, she will compete again, but this time for the title of national nude running champion. This is the first year a national title will be awarded for the sport. Training for a nude race is not much different than training for any other race, Lasseter said. In fact, the nudity isn't an issue at all. "It's something totally natural, our bodies were created to move like that." Now called Gulf Coast Nudist Resort, the development was the home of the original naturist Scouts in the 1970s.
Joe and Laura Swainston always wanted a naturist place of their own. In 1968, the dream became a reality when the couple purchased 40 acres and subdivided the unrecorded plat into 182 building lots in rural Hudson. The Swainstons also set aside seven acres of the land for a new private business called City Retreat Naturist Park. The entire subdivision was owned by City Retreat Inc., which allowed nudists to enjoy the comfort of buying and owning a home in a naturist subdivision. By 1971, the seven acres of naturist park expanded to 10 acres, and 39 of the building lots had been sold. A few lots were exchanged for the construction of a new pool. Want to cross "run a 5K in the buff" off your bucket list? There's still time to register for the upcoming Caliente Bare Dare at the discounted rate. This is the third year the race will will held at the resort, but it is the first time the results will determine the national champions of nude running, according to race officials. The national champions of nude running will reveal themselves soon in Land O’ Lakes. The Caliente Bare Dare 5K is in its third year, but this is the first year the race will determine the male and female national champions.
