Two dances for youth are scheduled for the holiday season.
Land O’ Lakes parents who want something special for their kids do to for Valentine’s Day have two options on the table if dancing is in their blood. Those options, however, are as different as night and day. Get Dolled up for the Father-Daughter Dance The Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex will once again play host to its Father-Daughter Dance. This dance is for dads and daughters who want to get all dolled up and spend a night cutting a rug. “The Father-Daughter Dance is going to be a magical evening full of music, dancing, raffles and a whole lot of fun,” said Cindy Szappan, recreation supervisor. The idea for a Valentine’s Day father-daughter dance was born two years ago when Elena Ruggiero, a recreation leader at the complex, suggested …

The first Teen Advisory Board meeting is set for Aug. 9.
Land O’ Lakes area teenagers who are looking for a way to get active in the community need only visit the library this Tuesday to get their chance. The Land O’ Lakes Library’s first Teen Advisory Board meeting of the new school year is set to start at 6 p.m. Youth ages 11 to 18 are invited to attend and get active in volunteering and planning events for the library. “It’s really the best chance for kids to get legitimate service hours for school,” said Paul Stonebridge, the Pasco County Library System’s teen services manager. TAB members have a big say in what happens at the library throughout the year, he added. “(Members) actually have a voice,” he said. “The TAB helps us plan all the events at the library.” The library has relied on its…

Human chess answers the “age-old question” of who’s the best.
Teens at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library have finally answered the question of who is the coolest of the cool. After two matches of human chess, pirates came out the victors. The Jan. 21 event involved a life-sized version of chess in which 32 players dressed up as either pirates or ninjas. Ryan Kova, 15, and Darnell Williams, 17, served as two of the actual players during the second match. Kova moved the pirate “pieces” and Williams controlled the ninjas. The two played on a regular-sized board and told their human pieces where to move on a larger board that was taped out on the floor of the library’s children’s room. Having control of human players was an experience neither is likely to forget. “You’re god,” said Williams. “You feel …

Four teams faced off in a battle of wills and culinary skills, but only one came out victorious in the Land O' Lakes Branch Library's Teen Chef Challenge Cook-Off. Staged Dec. 21, the event was just one of many the library plays host to on behalf of teens in the community. Ideas for most of the events, including the cook-off, are generated from the teens themselves, said Alicia Diaz, youth services librarian. "They wanted to have a multi-team chef challenge," explained Paul Stonebridge, youth services librarian. "They get to have their voice at the library," Diaz added. Bringing that voice to life; Diaz, Stonebridge, other adult coordinators and teen volunteers worked to put together the challenge. Using money donated by the Friends of the…
