Well, as I always said, you can take the man from the City Council, but you can't take the city council from the man! I think I said that. Thanks for your efforts Rob, I look forward to the Hacienda's new look and an improved NPR.

The Chasco Fiesta or "Fiasco" as I often label it is part of New Port Richey lore. There is definately the good, the bad, and the ugly. All that said, I definately enjoy it. One of my favorite snapshots is one I took of then Mayor Pete Altman dressed up as an Indian. His tall lanky appearance was a sight to behold. Aside from the controversey of how Indians are represented at Chasco, his standing at attention with colorful garb, feathers, and a lance is burned in my memory. I miss seeing Pete around and hope he and the family are well. We all need to keep our sense of humor, that's for sure. Chasco Fiesta is a New Port Richey original!

I should add that the Supreme Court should be above this game playing!

Sergei: Good points. It's called "slight of hand" or a diversionary tactic, where you focus attention on one issue while quietly dealing with another. Our politicians are experts at this.

This train will move slowly for a lot of reasons. I predict Ca's Prop 8 will be overturned and DOMA will be struck down but states will be able set their own rules for Gay Marriage. Let's see if that is the case. This is a tough one for the conservative voices on the Supreme Court. My bet is it will be a 5 to 4 vote for the outcome I predict. I've been wrong before!

Michael: Google Supreme Court and Gaymarriages. Then view news for the last 24 hours (it's a popdown). There is quite a bit of stuff. The New York TYimes has an article written today that is very helpful. Essentially, it is being suggested that Ca's Prop 8 will probably be overturned but the same sex marriage advocates may fall short of what they had hoped for. Remember, "It ain't over till it's over!"

John: Again, not much argument here. I have mentioned the difficulty of defining an assault weapon that is a semi-auto. Magazines are another issue. The car analogy plays well but is an apples to oranges analogy. The suggestions you made above, I fully agree with (the checks, mental health, etc.). I would add, as I have stated, the refunding of the State Mental Hospitals. Defunding them put a lot of sick people on the streets without appropriate care. This goes back to the 60s. We are still suffering the consequences as a community. LEOs had more options when the State Mental Health System was adequately funded. I have written about that issue in several editorials. It is true the large majority of mentally ill are rarely a danger. But a handful is all you need. The ones involved in the horrifics were insane - not just US horrifics. The Mentally ill should be treated and housed when necessary - every one of them. That's it for me tonight. Great conversation. Thank you.

John: Difficult comments to argue. Given the possibility that our government could go rogue. A concept I feel is off the wall, what weapontry do anyone of us possess that could possibly stand an assault from our government. I see no sense in an argument that suggests an AR15 or any such weapon would be little more than a pea shooter against a rogue goverment. My best advise would be to head for the hills! As for Obama and his policies - I see an administration struggling with many issues decades in the making. How well he achieves solutions will depend on the cooperation he must have. I think he has not been given proper credit for what he has accomplished to date. Believe me, I have plenty of problems with ObamaCare and the so called recovery. A subject for another day.

John: Registration is one of those tough issues as is defining an assault weapon. The other point you make is the "genie is out of the bottle." Absolutely no argument there. So, the question remains, can we move forward???? As mentioned in the initial blog, New York and Colorado have signed off on some regs. As argued, it is hard to quantify what has not or will not happen as the result of these gun rules or others under fire (literally). Yet, it makes sense to me that we have to do a better job of keeping weapons from dangerous people and disallowing multiround clips (30+) and their murderous portential. I still advocate for my noted restrictions.
