The Library was founded by Women's Civic Club of Safety Harbor in 1938 and has had a long history of success in the community. The first library was housed in the Club's community house with a second larger faculty later being built on a site obtained through a generous contribution of Dr. Salem Baranoff, founder of the Safety Harbor Spa and Resort. Dr. Baranoff's ongoing support of the Women's Civic Club, allowed the women to continue their commitment to provide necessary library services for the community. In 1994, the City of Safety Harbor opened the existing facility.  In April 2009, after significant community input and involvement, the library underwent a renovation that added 9,300 sq ft to the facility. The renovation expanded public space and added a meeting room with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, study rooms, and more. Additional new points of service included a story hour room, business center, and space dedicated for teens.  Also included in the expansion were vital new technologies such as Wifi access, additional public PCs and self-checkout. The new expansion also offers display space for local artists and other cultural and programming opportunities. The improved facility provides a connection to the public by offering many community groups an enhanced location for their meetings. Children and Adult programs are especially popular. Special collections include deaf, literacy, and Spanish collections and well as copies of the Safety Harbor Herald, online and protectedin Mylar sleeves for public access.  The Safety Harbor Public Library hosts the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative's Deaf Literacy Center main office.

In 2013 the Library will celebrate its 75th birthday!  Come visit us and see what we are all about.  Our website is:    www.cityofsafetyharbor.com/library
