Little Lambs Consignment Shop: Brand-Name Threads on a Budget

Need a little insight into local birth rates and the job market? Check your area consignment shop. 

“My store (stock) changes by the population,” said Dominique Switzer, who owns Little Lambs. “We haven’t been getting little people’s clothes in; we’ve been getting the bigger kids. … But just recently we’ve had a large influx of babies being born so my little kids section is growing again.”

Little Lambs, 1532 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., sells new and “gently used brand-name” clothing for preemie babies up through size 16. There is also a rotating stock of toys, shoes, books, uniforms for area schools and maternity items.

The shop is a place where parents can get the name brand without the heavy price tag.

“There are some (parents) that want particular name brands and come looking for that,” Switzer said. “There are others who don’t want to send their kids out with brand new clothes on the playground.”

For those particularly keen on saving a buck, Little Lambs also has a clearance section, dollar days twice a month and a front patio where everything sells for a dollar.

Switzer’s shop has been consigning clothing for 11 years now.  

“My youngest (child) went to kindergarten and my husband asked me what I wanted to do,” she said. “I said, 'Whenever you pass away, I’m going to open a children’s consignment store' so my husband helped me build this place. Literally we did all the construction. Here we are now. Now that child is in high school.”

Aside from being a place where expensive items can be purchased at inexpensive prices, Little Lambs is a good place to seek out and share parenting advice. Switzer brought up the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child.”

“This is the village,” Switzer said.

At Little Lambs, consignors consign their items for 90 days. All sales go through the computer and consignors can cash out at any time.

What’s hot now?

“Gymboree, always popular. Justice has become the new popular thing. Crazy 8 is one that’s starting to come in,” Switzer said. “Lilly Pulitzer just passed away this year so her items are more sought out at this point.”
