Job Loss Leads to One Sweet Business

The owner of Sandy’s CakePops, Cupcakes, Diaper Cakes & More took the plunge and started her own company about three years ago.

As the owner of a home-based baking business, Sandy Baez has been tickling taste buds for almost 3 years now.

“I’ve always had a love for baking and creating sweet treats,” said the Wesley Chapel resident, who has a background in the medical and insurance fields. “Due to loss of employment, I decided to take the plunge.”

Sandy’s CakePops, Cupcakes, Diaper Cakes & More provides sweets and gifts for weddings, birthdays and, really, any other special occasion one can think of. For those not in the know, “diaper cakes are made out of diapers and decorated with several baby toiletries and other useful baby items; they are a wonderful baby shower/newborn gift,” Baez said.

The entrepreneur said the most popular treats with customers are the cake pops (red velvet, specifically) and cupcakes (strawberry crème, specifically). She delivers in the Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel areas at no extra charge. Beyond those boundaries, there is a $25-$45 charge, and she also will ship anywhere in the country (shipping rates will vary).

The business certainly sounds like a good gig.

“I enjoy trying and experimenting with various recipes and flavors and don’t get tired of trying them all out,” Baez said.

But what’s the best part about owning your own business?

“Being able to spend more quality time with my family and doing what I truly love to do!” said Baez, adding she hopes to open her own shop one day.
