New Business Introduces Cake Decorating Fun to Kids

The Land O' Lakes-based mobile party company opened in August.

It was a love she discovered later in life than she’d hoped, but since then Stephanie Chu’s love for baking has panned out.

The Land O’ Lakes resident recently was at a crossroads professionally, she said. After completing an associate’s degree in Elementary Education, she needed to decide which path to take in her career.

That’s when she decided to take the plunge and start her own business. Chu opened Jocelyn Eve Events & Creations in August and set out to introduce children to the art of cake decorating, one party at a time.

The company, named after her two daughters, is a mobile party service that combines Chu’s passion for teaching, parties and cake art into a fun, festive way to keep kids entertained—and learning.

“I started baking about two years ago and found it to be really expensive to go to school for baking and pastry,” Chu said. “I wish I would've discovered my love for cake art years ago.”

By offering her service, Chu hopes to help children experience the joy of decorating at an early age, she said.

Chu travels to the client’s location and provides two hours of cake decorating instruction, complete with aprons and chef hats for all to wear during their edible art adventure.

“The party mom can choose from either four cupcakes or six inch cakes for each child. Colorful buttercream, sprinkles, and other edible embellishments are provided for décor,” Chu said.

Participants are taught the functions of different icing tips and shown how to create decorations, such as flowers and butterflies. Take-home boxes are provided for leftovers, she said.

The parties are not limited to birthdays. They can be booked for play dates, Girl Scout meetings, team building activities and more, Chu said.

The price for a party based on 10 children is $250 and includes a group photo. Additional children may be added for $20 each, Chu said.

Reservations made two weeks in advance are preferred, but Chu will “gladly” accept any party based on availability, she said. She accepts reservations throughout the Bay area and beyond, but does require an additional $25 for parties more than 30 miles from Land O' Lakes, she said.

Kristina Tristani, who shares Chu’s background in education and baking, recently joined the business, Chu said.

“She is truly a blessing, as she has an amazing willingness to help and is extremely motivated,” Chu said.

Kids covered in icing and sprinkles are general adorable, but one young artist stands out in Chu’s mind from a recent party in particular.

The young girl was very excited and asked a lot of questions, Chu said.  “At one point in the party she turned to me with sprinkles in her hand and said, almost as if scolding me, ‘I'm gonna put this on you! And you could be my cupcake!’”
