Independent Financial Services is offering a free seminar for anyone ages 55 to 65 to explain how social security can play an important role in retirement planning

  • Social Security benefits were initially paid in lump sums, before moving to the long-lasting practice of issuing monthly checks.
  • The first Social Security retirement check was issued to Ida May Fuller in the amount of $22.54 in January 1940. Miss Fuller, a legal secretary, lived to the age of 100. She received more than $22,000 during her 35 years as a Social Security beneficiary.
