Pasco Election Chief Plans for a Busy Year

Brian Corley discusses the upcoming election season in a guest commentary.

It’s hard to believe that the 2012 election cycle is just around the corner. My staff and I have been diligently preparing for a busy year with implementing nearly 80 new changes to the election code as a result of HB 1355.

Although we have accomplished much with gearing up for a presidential preference primary in January, municipal elections in April, a primary election in August, and the General Election in November, there is still the arduous task of reprecincting nearly 300,000 voters as soon as redistricting is finalized!

As legally required by Florida law, the Date Selection Committee appointed
by Gov. Scott, the speaker of the house and the Senate president, has
determined the date of the presidential preference primary to be Jan. 31, 2012. This is good news for elections offices across the state, which are
already engaging in preparations. The book closing date for this election will be Jan. 3, 2012.

There are two things I’m confident in: First, 2012 will be an incredibly hectic and busy year. Second, Pasco will again raise the bar higher (just ever so slightly) with excellence in elections administration. This is directly attributable to my incredible staff that never ceases to amaze me, and a dedicated army of poll workers who continually go above and beyond to help our voters.

For that I am eternally grateful, and I look forward to the coming year with assurance!
