Dr's In: Another gun related catastrophe

My first comment is to suggest you read my blog before putting pen in gear.

That said, those of you who follow my blog have read my suggestions for sensible gun regulation: No one should purchase a gun without an approved safety course, comprehensive background checks should be required, all guns should be registered, magazines should be limited to 7 rounds, military style weapons should not be available for public use, and guns should only be purchased through registered dealers. I have not changed my position on these recommendations.

However, listening to anti-regulation arguments, I have concluded that gun regulation alone will not stop the carnage. Mental health issues are connected to every bazaar shooting. I hear little about refunding or strengthening our Mental Health system of care. I have suggested the adequate rebuilding of our mental health hospitals and reception centers to assure care of the mentally ill.

A number of these incidents occurred because people were driven to insane distraction; perhaps the loss of income followed by the loss of a home; or the breakup of one’s family. An abusive manager or supervisor can cross a threshold and trigger deranged actions on the part of individuals. Many have no history of aberrant behavior. Some may attempt suicide, others suffer quietly, and some target those who are blamed for their misfortune.

I agree with the pro-gun people when they argue that regulating guns will not address the reason for such tragic behavior. There are larger issues to address than regulation. I do not agree that more guns will make us safer.

I do suggest that sensible gun regulation will reduce significantly the number of incidents. I mentioned that we could expect more incidents following the Aurora theater and Newton tragedies with the hope that both anti-regulation and pro-regulation folks could sit down and address issues together. As arguments go, I would have to say they are often both right. However, we are not moving forward with solutions. The gridlock will assure us of more and greater tragedies.
